Author
and security expert launches security assessment
and management business
Paul
E. Proctor, nationally-known author, speaker and security
technology expert, today announced the launch of his
new company, Practical Security, Inc. The company will
provide information technology security assessment,
management and training services for mid-sized companies.
Focused
on the core IT security and executive consulting services
that every business needs, Practical Security (PSI)
breaks its services down into four areas of practice:
- Security Assessment - which includes vulnerability
assessment, security audit, penetration testing and
data forensics;
- Security Management - which includes certification
and accreditation, requirement analysis, product selection,
system integration, and subscription services;
- Security Training - which includes product training,
security awareness training and software development
implications;
- Executive Services - which includes technology market
analysis, technical due diligence, and development of
industry white papers.
Chris
Byrnes, a Meta Group security analyst and co-author
with Proctor of his most recent book, said, "Paul's
experience working with Fortune 500 companies, the FBI,
CIA and NSA give him special insight into the security
issues plaguing today's world. His new company brings
both a practical and educational advantage to its clients
- Practical Security will not only know how to safeguard
its client's information assets, but will teach the
client's employees to be better prepared as well."
Proctor
is author of two books often used as university textbooks
on security issues: The Secured Enterprise: Protecting
Your Information Assets (with F. Christian Byrnes) and
The Practical Intrusion Detection Handbook, both published
by Prentice Hall. He was most recently senior vice president
for NFR Security, Inc., and previously held the position
of co-founder and chief technology officer at Centrax
Corporation. While at Science Applications International
Corporation (SAIC), he developed one of the first commercially
available host-based intrusion detection systems in
the early 1990's. Proctor holds a BS degree in mathematics
and computer science from the University of Illinois.
Speaking
from Las Vegas where he is moderating sessions at the
Black Hat Briefings, Paul said, "Companies benefit
from an ongoing process to reduce risk and safeguard
their enterprise information assets. Practical Security
has been formed to solve the issues of the smaller,
security conscious companies who need sophisticated
support but who cannot afford the large multinational
security companies' fees. We will help them to establish
their policies, safeguard their systems and educate
them so they learn how to stay abreast of changing security
issues with their own staffs."
While
at the Black Hat Briefings and DefCon conference, Proctor
will be participating in a book signing to be held at
Caesar's Hotel on July 31 from 6:00-6:45pm at the Black
Hat Gala Reception. Books can be purchased through Amazon
at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/103-9853949-7004645
and a limited number will also be available at the conference.
In addition, he will speak on "Defending Against
Internet Attacks" on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002 at
the Salt Lake City chapter of the Information Security
Systems Association (ISSA.) He will also be the keynote
speaker for the Discover Security Conference in Honolulu
on Oct. 17, 2002.
